Unfinished Oak Flooring Hardness

September 2nd, 2010 by admin

I was researching unfinished oak flooring and how hard it is.  I wanted to see how hard this wood was because the harder it is the more durable it is.  I learned that all wood’s harnesses are compared using a system called the Janka table.  Basically the test is performed by measuring how much force it takes to push a steel ball bearing into the wood halfway.  Seems kind of archaic to me, but I guess if they keep it constant it’s a good comparative number.  Oak rates around 1300 which is about high center in comparison for other woods.  Many of the woods higher on the list I’ve never heard of.  I think that unfinished oak flooring will be plenty durable for my needs.
